OTTAWA (AP) _ Steve Avery, trying to come back from shoulder surgery, allowed four hits and four runs in five innings Thursday night in the Richmond Braves' 9-2 loss to Ottawa.

Avery (0-2), the former Atlanta star who signed with the Braves as a free agent in February, is 0-2 in two starts with Richmond.

Avery, 30, pitched for Atlanta from 1990-96, joined Boston as a free agent in 1997 and spent last year with Cincinnati. He had arthroscopic surgery in August to repair a tear in his left rotator cuff.
