SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — U.S. agents on Saturday detained 59 migrants they say were stranded on an island off the west coast of Puerto Rico.

U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Ricardo Castrodad told The Associated Press that a person traveling through the area spotted the migrants on Desecheo island and called authorities.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Jeffrey Quinones said the migrants were Haitian and that there were 45 men and 14 women.

The number of Haitian migrants trying to reach the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico has increased in recent months.
