Bangladesh Poet Sufia Kamal Dies

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) _ Sufia Kamal, Bangladesh's best-loved poet and a champion of women's rights, died today of kidney failure in a Dhaka hospital, family and hospital sources said. She was 88.
The poet, popularly known as Begum Kamal, wrote prolifically on topics like communalism, religious fundamentalism and superstition, all of which she opposed. She promoted women's emancipation and democracy.
She also coordinated a committee fighting to bring to justice war criminals from Bangladesh's 1971 liberation war with Pakistan.
Begum Kamal is survived by two daughters and two sons. Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.
