Man Fakes Injury With Ketchup, Kills Mother's Best Friend, Police Say
Aug. 09, 1987
CHICAGO (AP) _ A man who smeared ketchup on his forehead to fake an injury persuaded his mother's best friend to let him into her apartment, where he stabbed the woman to death, police said.
Chundell Leaks of Chicago was charged with murder on Sunday, said police Detective James Cassidy. He said robbery charges might be filed later.
''Basically, the motive was robbery,'' Cassidy said. ''He used the ketchup to arouse the woman's sympathies.''
Leaks, 21, stabbed Katie DeBerry, 42, many times in the chest and arms after gaining entry Saturday morning, then stole the woman's videocassette recorder and other items, Cassidy said.
A bond hearing for Leaks was scheduled Monday, Cassidy said.
Police did not recover the weapon used in the slaying, Cass said.
