LINARES, Spain (AP) _ Anatoly Karpov and Andrei Sokolov agreed to a draw Thursday after 38 moves in the fifth game of their match to determine who will challenge world champion Garri Kasparov.
Karpov leads the 14-game match 3-2. The first player to reach 7.5 points is the winner.
Experts began predicting a draw early in the game, but on his 21st move Karpov appeared to be playing for a win by trying to prod Sokolov's weaknesses.
Sokolov was able to fend off the attack despite having only 14 minutes left for his last 14 moves. He offered the draw after his 38th move.
''Sokolov is in serious trouble in the match,'' Danish international master Bjarke Kristensen said. ''Sokolov has only got four games left with the advantage of the white pieces, but in the last games he hasn't been able to gain any advantage from the opening.''
