LEWISTON, Maine (AP) _ Bates snapped a New England-record 37-game losing streak by defeating winless Bowdoin 33-29 on Saturday as P.J. McGrail rushed for 231 yards and scored three touchdowns.
The Bobcats' last victory also was over Bowdoin, a 19-13 win on Nov. 3, 1990.
Bates took a safety on its last possession to close out the scoring. Ramon Martinez then drove his team to the Bates 2, where linebacker Mike Holte and lineman Brendan Cullen stopped him as time expired.
Martinez passed for 367 yards and three touchdowns for the Polar Bears (0-7), who took their first and only lead 20-19 on Doug Brawn's third-quarter reception.
Bates (1-6) moved back in front on McGrail's third touchdown, a 3-yard run, and added a fourth-quarter touchdown on quarterback Dan Hooley's 1-yard keeper. Hooley also passed for 144 yards and two scores.
Martinez put Bowdoin within striking distance on a 25-yard pass to Tony Texeira.
