UC-Santa Barbara Beats Vanderbilt
Dec. 14, 1998
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Stacy Clinesmith scored 20 points as No. 25 UC-Santa Barbara beat Vanderbilt 84-81 Sunday night.
After Vanderbilt's Katie Janky hit two free throws to tie the game at 76 with 2:09 remaining, Ashley Smith followed with a layup to put Vanderbilt (3-4) up 78-76.
But Clinesmith answered with a 3-pointer and made 5 of 6 free throws in the final seconds to preserve the victory for the Gauchos (5-2).
Vanderbilt was looking for some measure of revenge after losing to Santa Barbara in the first round of the NCAA tournament last March, ending the Commodores' streak of sweet 16 appearances.
Erin Buescher scored 19 points for Santa Barbara, Kristi Rohr added 16, and Tawnee Cooper finished with 12.
Paige Redman led Vanderbilt with 24 points, Ostendorf added 19, and Jennifer Holmes finished with 17.
