English-language program survives Washoe County school cuts
Apr. 11, 2018
RENO, Nev. (AP) — The Washoe County school board has tentatively shelved a proposal to cut 10 teaching positions from the program that teaches thousands of students the English language.
The Reno Gazette Journal reports the board moved forward Tuesday with preliminary approval of more than $2 million in proposed spending cuts.
But it voted down a proposal to save more than $682,000 by eliminating the 10 jobs in the English language program.
The board won't settle on a final budget until May or June.
School board officials say they're trying to tackle a $7 million budget deficit.
The preliminary cuts approved Tuesday include the elimination of more than 30 other positions ranging from bus drivers to a teacher in the Gifted and Talented Program. They also would cut the school district's overall travel budget in half.
