Counterfeit Credentials Confiscated
Jul. 21, 1988
ATLANTA (AP) _ Authorities on Wednesday said they confiscated several counterfeit delegate credentials being worn by persons in the Pennsylvania delegation.
One volunteer working for the Pennsylvania state committee was leaving the floor when a security person noticed she was wearing a fake credential, confiscated it and removed the volunteer from the convention arena, said Karen Balaban, counsel to the state committee.
She said the volunteer was handed the credential by a woman while they were riding to the convention center from the suburban hotel where the delegation is staying.
Security officials then checked the entire delegation and five people were escorted from the center, said Pennsylvania state chairman Larry Yatch.
After the discovery, security was tightened at the entrances to The Omni, site of the Democratic gathering, with credentials being scanned by special laser devices to check for authenticity.
Yatch said he explained to security that a number of people without credentials had wanted to get into the Omni to hear Pennsylvania Gov. Robert P. Casey address the convention.
''It was just people who were a little over zealous,'' Yatch said.
