Body of One Pilot Found in Iraq
May. 03, 2005
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) _ The body of an American pilot was found Tuesday during a search for two missing Marine fighter jets in Iraq, the U.S. military said.
As the search continued Tuesday, the military did not say whether either of the two F/A-18 Hornet aircraft had been found, whether the discovered body had been recovered or how many servicemen had been aboard the two warplanes.
But the brief statement suggested that one of the warplanes had crashed.
The U.S. military said there was no indication of hostile fire in the area when contact was lost with the two warplanes from the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier at 10:10 p.m. (2:10 p.m. EDT) Monday.
The two F/A-18s were flying in support of coalition operations in Iraq, the military said.
Some F/A-18 models are built for one pilot, while others can hold a two-member crew.
