Reno Meets Abortion Rights Groups
Oct. 28, 1998
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Some abortion rights supporters said they came away encouraged by a meeting with Attorney General Janet Reno on violence directed at doctors and clinics that perform abortions.
About 20 representatives of several groups _ from service providers to activists who protect clinics _ met with Reno for about an hour Wednesday, days after a Buffalo, N.Y.-area doctor, Barnett Slepian, was shot to death in his kitchen by a sniper.
``It was an extremely productive meeting. We came away from it very optimistic that the attorney general, who has always been very responsive, is going to be even more so and is prepared to take on some vigorous and coordinated work,'' said Gloria Feldt, president of Planned Parenthood, which lobbies for abortion rights.
``She understands the urgency and the fact that although we have freedom of access and that the Justice Department has certainly stepped up its activities, she clearly understands how dire the situation is right now,'' Feldt said.
Feldt said Reno listened carefully to the suggestions the representatives offered and agreed to study them.
``We expect we will have another meeting and continue to pursue various action _ both prevention and apprehension,'' Feldt said. The suggestions included taking steps to make sure that different law enforcement agencies share what information they have on suspects.
