BOL, Croatia (AP) _ Christina Brandi of Bradenton, Fla., beat Noelle Van Lottum of France 6-4, 6-1 Monday in the rain-shortened first round of the Croatian Bol Ladies Open.
Brandi and Van Lottum were the only players to get their first-round match in before play was called for the day. Brandi is ranked 89th by WTA.
Brandi took a 5-2 advantage in the first set, but allowed Van Lottum, ranked 100th, to close to 5-4. Van Lottum then lost her serve and the set. Brandi dominated the second set with a solid baseline game.
Croatia's 15-year-old star, Mirjana Lucic, qualified to play in the tournament by defeating Rita Kuti-Kis of Hungary. This will be the first WTA tournament for Lucic, the No. 1 junior female.
