KNOKKE-HEIST, Belgium (AP) _ Top-seeded Kim Clijsters won her opening round match at the WTA Sanex Trophy tournament Tuesday, beating Ludmila Cervanova 6-3, 6-3.

This was Clijsters' first match since losing to Lindsay Davenport in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

Second-seeded Silvia Farina Elia of Italy also reached the second round, beating Jaslyn Hewitt of Australia 6-4, 6-2. But sixth-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland withdrew after winning the first set 1-6 and losing the second 6-4 against Maria Jose Martinez of Spain.

Another unseeded Spanish player, Cristina Torrens Valero, defeated eighth-seeded Argentine Mariana Diaz-Oliva 6-2, 6-0 on the clay courts at the Royal La Zoute club.
