Monster Truck Accident Kills One
Jan. 03, 1998
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) _ A beefed-up truck went out of control and headed into the sidelines during a monster truck show, killing one employee and injuring another.
About 2,000 people were watching the show in the Prairie Capital Convention Center. The event was stopped after Friday's accident.
The Ford Bronco, driven by D. Shane Ballard of Springfield, Mo., apparently had some type of equipment failure, veered out of control and headed into a chute leading between the spectator stands, police Sgt. Bill Pittman said.
The Bronco struck the two men and became wedged between an end-loader and a wall, Pittman said. Ballard was not injured, he said.
Police would not release the victims' names.
Pittman said the dead man was an employee of a towing company working at the show. The injured man, listed in good condition with rib injuries, was a coordinator of the event, he said.
