Beating Victim Dies In Apparent Racial Attack
Nov. 14, 1988
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) _ An Ethiopian man who was beaten to death with a baseball bat Sunday was attacked by a group of white supremecist skinheads, police said.
Mulugeta Seraw, 27, was beaten outside his home about 1:30 a.m., police said. The African immigrant died eight hours later at Emanuel Hospital & Health Center.
Police were looking for five people believed to be members of the Skinheads, a group committed to the use of violence against blacks, Jews and minorities.
Skinheads, neo-Nazis so named for their close-cropped hair, advocate partitioning the country, setting aside the five Northwestern states for whites and the rest for blacks. They generally dress in military-style clothing.
The attackers were three young men and two young women who drove up in a car as two friends dropped Seraw off at his house, said police spokesman Dave Simpson. The two friends also were beaten.
Wondwosen Tesfaye, 24, of Portland was in fair condition Sunday at Emanuel. Tilahule Antneh, 31, also of Portland, was not hospitalized, Simpson said.
