INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Romaine Haywood scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Thursday night to lead LaSalle to a 73-71 victory over Butler in the Midwest Collegiate Conference.
LaSalle (10-7, 4-2 in the MCC) won despite missing 6 of 11 free throws in the final 3:39. Paul Burke made two free throws with 1:31 left to put the Explorers ahead 72-69, and Derick Newton made 1 of 2 with 15 seconds left to guarantee the win.
LaSalle jumped out to a 27-17 lead in the first half. Haywood made two 3-pointers during the spurt and made 4 of 8 for the game.
Butler (11-6, 5-2) closed the gap to 42-38 at halftime. Chris Miskel led the Bulldogs with nine points in the half and finished with a team-high 15.
Butler led 69-68 with 2:51 to play on a 3-point play by Chris Miskel, but the Explorers scored the next four points for the win.
Kareem Townes scored 20 points, including 17 in the first half, for LaSalle. Burke added 14 points and eight assists.
Dan Dudokovich scored 14 points and handed out six assists for Butler. Jon Neuhouser added 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
