BOSTON (AP) _ Shawn Bates scored two goals and Byron Dafoe got his ninth shutout this season as Boston shut out Philadelphia 3-0 to move into a tie with the Buffalo Sabres for the seventh spot in the NHL's Eastern Conference.
Philadelphia was playing without Eric Lindros, who is probably out for the rest of the regular season with a collapsed lung.
Philadelphia was also missing second leading scorer John LeClair who has an injured back, Mark Recchi who has post-concussion syndrome and Eric Desjardins, out with a torn left anterior curciate ligament.
Dafoe stopped 24 shots. His last shutout came Mar. 24 against Ottawa. Dafoe is 5-1-3 in his last nine starts.
Sergei Samsonov scored his 23rd goal of the season at 16:20 of the first period on a wrist shot from right in front of the net. Boston defenseman Don Sweeney assisted on the goal giving him his first point in 33 games.
Bates' first goal of the game, fourth of the season, came on a wraparound shot from the right side of the net at 8:58 of the second period. Dmitri Khristich contributed his second assist of the game and 41st of the season as the Bruins took a 2-0 lead.
They made it 3-0 at the six minute mark of the third period when Bates flicked his fifth goal of the season into the net from just to the left of the goal crease.
Notes: Boston continues to lead the NHL in penalty killing. Saturday the shutout the Flyers on four power play opportunities. The Bruins have killed off 43 of their last 44 times short and have allowed just three power play goals in their last 66 times short dating back to Feb. 21.
