SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. (AP) — The Spokane County sheriff's office says deputies shot and killed a man who held a gun to his head during a confrontation at a gas station in Spokane Valley.

The office says police responded Sunday morning to reports of a man driving erratically, pulling into a gas station and breaking his vehicle windows. When deputies approached him, he pulled out a handgun and put it to his head.

Authorities closed the road, shut off fuel to the gas station and held train traffic through the area.

The sheriff's office says SWAT members approached him in his vehicle, which was parked next to gas pumps. Negotiators tried to talk to him but he continued to put his handgun at his head. The office says at one point SWAT members perceived a threat and fired their weapons.
