MARJAYOUN, Lebanon (AP) _ At least one Israeli soldier was injured in gunbattles early Saturday between Israeli forces and Hezbollah guerrillas in southern Lebanon.

Lebanese security officials said two soldiers were wounded, but an Israeli army spokesman in Jerusalem said only one officer was moderately injured when Hezbollah attacked with mortar and small-arms fire.

Fighting raged between Israeli commandos apparently on patrol duty and the guerrillas at Bir Kallab and Rihan in the eastern sector of an Israeli-occupied enclave in southern Lebanon, the Lebanese officials said on customary condition of anonymity.

Four Israeli helicopter gunships came to the rescue of the troops and shelled suspected guerrilla positions, said the officials, without giving any further details.

A Hezbollah spokesman, speaking in Beirut on condition of anonymity, confirmed two hours of clashes beginning at 3:30 a.m. Guerrillas attacked ``a gathering of enemy troops and inflicted a number of casualties,'' he said without elaborating.

The area is nine miles north of the Israeli border.

An Israeli officer was killed and another wounded in a similar clash at Rihan on Wednesday.
