Three Men Rescued After Boat Hit by Squall
May. 11, 2006
FREEPORT, Texas (AP) _ Three men whose catamaran was disabled by a squall were rescued Wednesday evening as another storm approached.
The boat was on its way from Boca Raton, Fla., to Rockport when the first storm hit Wednesday morning, breaking the mast and leaving the men stranded almost 40 miles east of Freeport, the U.S. Coast Guard said. Freeport is about 45 miles southwest of Galveston.
The crew tried to use the engine to get to shore but ran out of fuel on the way. A Coast Guard helicopter hoisted the men from the 32-foot boat as another storm approached.
Paul Vercellone, 55, of Rockport, who is the captain and owner of the catamaran, along with Ed Bright, 54, of Pensacola, Fla., and Mark Landcaster, 50, of Point Washington, Fla., were taken to an air station in Houston.
