Elderly Man Dies After Stretcher Overturns
May. 02, 1991
PITTSBURGH (AP) _ A 76-year-old man died after the ambulance stretcher he was strapped to rolled down a grade and overturned, the Allegheny County coroner's office said.
Edward Juchniewicz of Canonsburg was being transported Monday from a nursing home to a doctor's office for an appointment.
The ambulance attendants left the stretcher in the parking lot at the doctor's office and went to talk with the doctor's staff, authorities said. The cot drifted away and turned over, causing a head injury, the coroner's office said.
The man was treated at Canonsburg General Hospital, then airlifted to Allegheny General Hospital, where he died early Wednesday.
Final results of an autopsy were pending. But preliminary findings showed were that Juchniewicz suffered a stroke and head injuries.
The coroner's offices in Allegheny and Washington counties is investigating the death. The manager of the ambulance service declined to comment.
