Jan. 17, 1997
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) _ A judge today sentenced the two top leaders of the Cali drug cartel to jail terms of nine and 10 1/2 years for drug trafficking and other crimes.
It was the first criminal ruling against Gilberto and Miguel Rodriguez Orejuela, brothers who each have at least four other cases pending against them in connection with running one of the world's largest cocaine rings.
The brothers have been jailed in Bogota since their capture during the summer of 1995, Gilberto in June and Miguel two months later.
Gilberto, who received the stiffest sentence, also was fined $8 million, and Miguel was fined $4.6 million in connection with the case. They had faced jail terms of up to 24 years but cooperated with the authorities.
