NEW YORK (AP) _ Derrick Brown scored 22 points and Providence rallied for a 72-59 victory over St. John's on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.
Ruben Garces added 17 points and had four blocked shots and God Shammgod had 12 points for the Friars (13-5, 5-3 Big East) in coach Pete Gillen's 250th career victory. He has an overall record of 250-105 in his 12th season as a head coach and is 48-30 in his third season at Providence.
Zendon Hamilton had 20 points for the Red Storm (9-8, 4-5), while Charles Minlend added 19 and Felipe Lopez had 10.
Hamilton had two baskets as St. John's scored the first six points of the second half to take a 33-30 lead. The Red Storm led 41-37 when Brown and Jason Murdock each had two 3-pointers in a 24-8 run that gave the Friars a 61-49 lead with 7:23 to play.
The Friars were able to win for the eighth time in their last 10 games despite getting only four points on 2-of-10 shooting by senior Austin Croshere, who was limited to 25 minutes by foul trouble.
Providence finished 5-of-16 from 3-point range with Brown going 3-for-5 and Murdock 2-for-2.
