PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Old Glory burned before a thousands of people in the birthplace of American independence, but it wasn't a free speech demonstration.
The flag was accidentally ignited by fireworks over Veterans Stadium after a Philadelphia Phillies baseball game Monday night. The cloth Stars and Stripes, flown about 50 feet above the stands in center field, swiftly went up in flames.
Phillies spokesman Larry Shenk said the flag has been replaced, but with more fireworks planned after a Wednesday night baseball game, it was moved temporarily to another pole.
''It's never happened before, but we're not taking any chances,'' he said.
