EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) _ Wesley Person scored 20 points, including eight during a 10-0 burst to close the third quarter, as the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the New Jersey Nets 85-74 Thursday night.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas also scored 20 and Brevin Knight added 12 for the Cavs, who overcame 26 rebounds by Jayson Williams of the Nets.

Sam Cassell scored 32 points for injury-depleted New Jersey, which lost its second in a row following four straight wins to open the season. The Nets had only nine players available and lost forward Chris Gatling to a sprained right ankle in the third quarter.

The Nets pulled to 52-51 with 3:25 remaining in the third when Cassell capped a 6-0 run with a driving layup.

But Cleveland, which won its second straight and improved to 4-3, cut the comeback short as Person drained consecutive 3-pointers.

After Ilgauskas hit a pair of free throws to give the Cavs a 60-51 edge, Person closed the third quarter with a jumper.

New Jersey opened a 25-20 first-period lead as Cassell scored 17 of his points. Cleveland took the lead for good scoring six of the last seven points in the first half, including four by Derek Anderson, to open a 43-39 lead at intermission.

The Nets shot just 31 percent and committed 22 turnovers.

Notes: The Nets are riddled with injuries. Steve Henson (broken finger), Don MacLean (knee tendinitis) and Lucious Harris (broken metacarpal) are on the injured list while Kevin Edwards and Kerry Kittles are sidelined with strained groins and Keith Van Horn has a sprained right ankle. ... Cassell and Williams both played despite colds. ... Three rookies (Anderson, Knight and Ilgauskas) started for the Cavaliers. .. The conclusion of the game was delayed by seven minutes after Williams accidently ripped the net after being fouled trying to dunk the ball with 3:43 to play.
