LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) _ The Chicago Bears released quarterback Mark Hartsell and signed free agent quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver on Tuesday.
Tolliver, a 10-year veteran, spent the last three seasons with the New Orleans Saints. He did not appear in a game last season.
Tolliver re-signed with the Saints in November after starter Jeff Blake was placed on injured reserve. During the 1999 season, he played in 10 games, with seven starts, throwing for 1,915 yards and seven touchdowns.
Hartsell appeared in one game for the Bears last season, subbing for Shane Matthews for one series against Green Bay. Hartsell was cut by Chicago following the 2000 training camp, but signed with the practice squad after Cade McNown separated his shoulder in October.
Hartsell moved to the active roster for the final six games of the season after Jim Miller tore his Achilles tendon.
