Commentary from Hong Kong today, the first day of Chinese sovereignty:
``The Chinese people have never ... forgotten for a single day the humiliating state of Hong Kong and occupation, and never stopped that indomitable struggle for state sovereignty and national emancipation.'' _ Chinese President Jiang Zemin, at a celebration on the first day of Chinese rule in the former British colony.
``Today is a momentous day for China. Today is a joyous day for all Chinese people.'' _ Hong Kong's new Beijing-supported leader Tung Chee-hwa, at the same ceremony.
``We washed out the old order and washed in the new.'' _ Rosemary Inglis, a businesswoman whose grandfather settled in Hong Kong.
