KNOKKE-HEIST, Belgium (AP) _ Top seeds Dominique Van Roost and Sabine Appelmans cruised into the quarterfinals of the Sanex Trophy WTA tournament Thursday.

Van Roost, top-seeded Belgian, defeated Spain's Ana Isabel Medina Garrigues 6-1, 6-4, on the clay courts at the Royal La Zoute club in this North Sea resort.

Her compatriot Appelmans beat Marlene Weingartner of Germany, 6-4, 6-3. Sixth-seeded Anna Smashnova of Israel also advanced, beating Switzerland's Emmanuelle Gagliardi 6-2, 6-2.

In the day's other match, Austria's Patricia Wartusch knocked out another local favorite Els Callens 6-1, 6-4.

Van Roost will face Madagascar's Dally Randriantefy in the quarterfinals, while Appelmans takes on Spain's Marta Marrero. In the other matches, Smashnova will face Sarah Pitkowski of France, and Wartusch will take on third-seeded Magui Serna.
