Calif. Hospitals Workers Return
Jul. 07, 2000
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ Almost 4,000 health care employees headed back to work Friday after a one-day walkout that left hospitals open but operating at reduced capacity.
Hospitals reported that there were no shortfalls in care. The 10 affected had transferred some patients to other hospitals, canceled elective surgeries, cut back on outpatient services and hired temporary workers.
Striking workers _ receptionists, food service workers, nursing assistants and respiratory therapists _ said Thursday's strike was to protest years of corporate mergers, staff cutbacks and profit-seeking they say has harmed patient care.
