Henry Winkler Loses Emmy Bid
Jul. 25, 2000
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Who would have thought a tough guy like the Fonz could let an Emmy nomination get away?
Henry Winkler, who played Fonzie on ``Happy Days,'' was ruled ineligible for a comedy guest actor bid for ``Battery Park'' because the episode didn't air within the Emmy eligibility period.
Winkler might yet be a winner: He's nominated in the drama guest actor category for an appearance on ``The Practice.''
``The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away,'' Winkler said. ``I am thrilled to be nominated for 'The Practice' and 'Battery Park,' even though it did not qualify.''
His ``Battery Park'' episode was set to air in April, but the low-rated sitcom was pulled by NBC. The half-hour featuring Winkler didn't air until June, and the nomination cutoff date set by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences was May 31.
William H. Macy will step into Winkler's spot with a nomination for his work on ABC's ``Sports Night.'' He will compete with Bruce Willis, Tom Selleck, Carl Reiner and Anthony LaPaglia. The primetime Emmys are Sept. 10.
