MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — A Brooklyn man who fled from police and caused a wrong-way crash that killed his passenger and her unborn child has pleaded guilty.
Newsday reports 29-year-old Courtney Corbett pleaded guilty Tuesday to multiple offenses including second-degree manslaughter, fleeing police and assault.
Police say Corbett was fleeing in a vehicle June 18 following a report of a robbery at a cosmetic store in Manhasset when he drove the wrong way onto a Long Island Expressway exit ramp, striking a vehicle.
Corbett was arrested at the scene. Demytra Gibbs, who was six months pregnant, was taken to a hospital where she and the couple's unborn child were pronounced dead. Several other people were injured.
Corbett faces up to 8 years in prison when he's sentenced Jan. 3.
