Alaska Officer Killed in Shootout
Jan. 03, 1998
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) _ A man who hid in his house with a semiautomatic rifle and ammunition fatally shot one officer and grazed another in a New Year's Day shootout that ended when the gunman killed himself.
Kevin Lamm, 26, became only the second police officer killed in the line of duty in Fairbanks in 90 years.
Police said the shootout began early Thursday evening when Lamm and two other officers went to a house to check on Joey Lee Dewolf, who friends described as suicidal. Investigators later said he was hiding behind a blanket tacked over a doorway with clips of ammo around him.
Dewolf, 27, was hit in the stomach and arm by police before shooting himself in the head, police said Friday. Officer Matt Soden was grazed by bullets. He was treated and released.
