HOLLY HILL, Fla. (AP) — Authorities in Florida say two dogs and a cat have died in a house fire.

Holly Hill Fire Chief James Bland tells the Daytona Beach News-Journal that the occupants of the home escaped the fire on Sunday evening, but the animals didn't get out.

He says crews tried to save one of the dogs but "it was soon proven fruitless."

Bland says the homeowners didn't know how the fire started. The state fire marshal's office will investigate.
