Feb. 01, 1997
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) _ Former world champion Thomas Hearns knocked out Ed Dalton at 2:38 of the fifth round in their scheduled 10-round light heavyweight bout Friday night.
Hearns toppled Dalton with a short right. Dalton got up at the count of eight but referee Lou Moret stopped the fight at the Forum.
Hearns, 38, was ahead on all three judges' cards in winning his seventh straight bout. It was his first fight since knocking out Karl Willis on Nov. 29.
Hearns, of Detroit, improved to 57-4-1 with 45 knockouts. He weighed 175 pounds.
Dalton, 175 1/2, fell to 12-4-2 with four knockouts.
Dalton, of Emmett, Idaho, battled back despite a cut over his right eye in the third round. He started quickly and landed several punches before Hearns began wearing him down.
The scheduled bout between former WBC junior middleweight champion John Mugabi of Australia and Armando Campos was canceled after Mugabi was unable to obtain a visa.
Mugabi is attempting a comeback after a five-year layoff.
