Light rain pushed into the Northwest early today, but the first day of summer meant only one thing for most of the nation _ heat, both sticky and dry.
Thunderstorms packing hail and the potential for tornadoes were forecast over the Plains and the Great Lakes by tonight. Isolated evening storms also were expected across the Southeast.
Very hot weather _ highs in excess of 100 degrees _ were likely from Arizona into Texas and Oklahoma. Highs in the 90s and high humidity were expected in parts of the Northeast.
Pleasant weather was expected along the West Coast, where highs were forecast in the 70s. Showers were likely across the Northwest.
On Friday, 9 inches of rain fell on parts of eastern Michigan, while high winds knocked down trees and destroyed a home under construction.
Baseball-size hail smashed windshields and windows in Cheyenne County, Neb., while the same storm system was responsible for four tornadoes that touched down in rural northeastern Colorado. No injuries were reported.
The high temperature reported in the continental United States on Friday was 109 in Daggett, Calif., while the low was 33 at Grand Canyon, Ariz.
Highs today were forecast in the 60s in the Northwest, the 70s along the West Coast and Rockies, the 80s in the Midwest and Great Lakes, the 90s in Southeast, Northeast and Plains and the 100s in the Southwest.
