FAIR HAVEN, Vt. (AP) — A teenager who turned over online messages to authorities from a Vermont youth accused of planning "to shoot up" his former high school says she wants to see more discussion about mental health.
Seventeen-year-old Angela McDevitt says she attended a treatment facility in Maine with 18-year-old Jack Sawyer. Police said the two were messaging each other online when Sawyer revealed his plans. Sawyer pleaded not guilty to attempted aggravated murder and other offenses.
WCAX-TV reports McDevitt says she struggles with her own mental health issues. She said she wants to see changes to how mental health factors into background checks when people are buying guns.
McDevitt says the current background check system does not do enough to dig into why someone is buying the gun and what they might do with it.
