WILD HORSES

BILLINGS, Mont. — A federal judge in Montana temporarily stopped a mustang roundup planned for Sunday in response to a lawsuit filed by wildlife advocates who argued that it would destroy the genetic viability of a herd descended from the mounts of Spanish conquistadors. U.S. District Judge Susan Watters on Friday ordered the Bureau of Land Management not to conduct the roundup on the 59-square mile (154-square kilometer) Pryor Mountain Wild House Range along the Montana-Wyoming border. EXCHANGE YELLOWSTONE'S PLANT RECOVERY

BILLINGS, Mont. — If there's a plant-based poster child for wildland fire in the subalpine forests of Yellowstone National Park, it would be the cone of the lodgepole pine tree. "All of these forests evolved with fire after the last glacial retreat," said Roy Renkin, a vegetation specialist for Yellowstone National Park. "Different species have evolved different mechanisms to deal with fire." By Brett French, The Billings Gazette. SENT: 840 words.

EXCHANGE FLY FISHING-WOMEN

BILLINGS, Mont. — When they put the word out on social media, the founding members of Last Chance Fly Gals didn't know what to expect ahead of their first meeting in January. "We were hoping for 70, but there were 140 women that showed up, and it's only grown from there," said Shalon Hastings. "We've gotten tremendous support." By Tom Kuglin, Independent Record. SENT: 874 words.
