SPRING, Texas (AP) — Houston-area sheriff's officials have changed their account of a deadly shooting involving a man handcuffed by deputies who was able to retrieve a gun and fire.
Harris County sheriff's deputies went to a Spring home Jan. 31 on a disturbance call and encountered 35-year-old Matthew Vincent Cobb.
Authorities said at the time that Cobb was handcuffed when he broke free from custody, pulled a gun from his pants, shot a deputy and critically injured another man.
But officials clarified in a statement Friday that it's not clear if Cobb's gunfire struck anyone before he ran into a bathroom where he fatally shot himself.
A deputy who ran from the gunfire turned back in Cobb's direction and fired, striking the second man, who was a resident of the home.
Another deputy also was shot but it's not yet clear by whom.
Both are recovering from their injuries.
