FAIRFIELD, Calif. (AP) — A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer and a man he had pulled over were both killed after a truck hit them in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Officer Kirk Griess was pronounced dead at a hospital after the Friday morning crash in Fairfield.

CHP says Griess had pulled over an SUV on the right shoulder of Interstate 80. A pickup truck on the highway hit Griess and the SUV before fleeing.

Chief Ernie Sanchez of the CHP's Golden Gate division says Griess was a 19-year veteran of the agency and called it a "tough day."

The 46-year-old Griess, who's a military veteran, is survived by his wife and three children.

The driver of the SUV who was killed was identified as 49-year-old Jaime Bueza Manuel of Vallejo.
