FORMER TREASURER-SENTENCING

BENTON, Ill. — The former treasurer of a southern Illinois city has been sentenced to 48 months in prison for embezzling more than $300,000 from the city over a four-year period. Ryan Thorpe was indicted by a federal grand jury on wire fraud and embezzlement from a local government charges. Thorpe was accused of stealing more than $315,000 from the city of Ziegler. — ILLINOIS HOUSE-SEXUAL HARASSMENT: Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan says he will hire a human resources director and officer for equal employment opportunity and affirmative action to combat sexual harassment.

— OPRAH-CRUISE: Oprah Winfrey will serve as godmother of a new Holland America ship called the Nieuw Statendam (pronounced new STAHT-un-dam). In a video recorded with her pal Gayle King, Winfrey recounted "sailing to Alaska last year" on a Holland America ship, adding that she is "setting sail again." With AP Photo.

— DOMESTIC VIOLENCE-CHICAGO: Chicago may impose a new surcharge on home share rentals through sites such as Airbnb and use the money to provide more beds at domestic violence shelters. Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Tuesday the 2 percent surcharge could generate about $1.3 million.

— HOSPITAL REDEVELOPMENT: Officials have begun to act on a $1 billion plan to redevelop an old Chicago hospital that's been vacant for more than a decade. Developers plan to turn at least part of the old Cook County Hospital on the city's West Side into a Hyatt hotel.

— CHILD PORNOGRAPHY-SENTENCING: A Chicago man who prosecutors say had girls write on their bodies that he owned them has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for child pornography.
