ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) — An eastern Missouri man has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for shooting a teacher who was jogging on a trail near Francis Howell High School in St. Charles County.

KSDK-TV reports that 36-year-old Joshua Curtis of Winfield was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to first-degree assault and armed criminal action.

In November, Carl Wayne was jogging on the Hamburg Trail near the school where he teaches. He was shot in the back. He looked back and saw Curtis pointing a gun. Wayne was able to make it to a highway, where he flagged down help. He recovered.

Police searched a wooded area near the scene and captured Curtis the next day after finding his tent. Police say Wayne was shot at random.
