SEATTLE (AP) _ American Airlines has ordered 20 Boeing 757200 mid-range jetliners in a deal worth $1.4 billion, the aircraft manufacturer announced Tuesday.

Deliveries of the jets will begin next year and continue through 2002. The order, the largest in dollar amount for Boeing so far this year, pushes the 757 series over the 1,000-order mark to 1,009.

The single-aisle 757-200 jetliner seats up to 229 passengers and can fly 4,520 miles. Boeing has delivered 920 aircraft in the series since it was introduced in 1983.

Boeing has received orders for 152 aircraft so far this year, and had delivered 75 as of March 31. The company hopes to deliver 490 aircraft by year's end despite a 40-day engineers' strike that halted deliveries in February and March.

France-based Airbus Industrie, Boeing's only commercial jet rival, had 85 orders for new aircraft as of April 27.
