LONDON (AP) _ A beaming Queen Mother Elizabeth appeared with several members of her family outside Clarence House to greet thousands of well-wishers on her 86th birthday Monday.
The newlywed Duke and Duchess of York won a huge cheer when they appeared at her side, along with her daughters Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret and the Prince and Princess of Wales.
The royals spent two minutes acknowledging the applause before going back inside for a family luncheon.
Earlier in the day the ''Queen Mum,'' accompanied by two police officers, stepped onto the sidewalk to the strains of ''Happy Birthday'' played by the pipe and drum band of the 2nd Batallion Scots Guards. Some of the estimated 2,500 who had gathered through the morning sang along and children ran forward to press bouquets into her hands.
The Queen Mother, widow of King George VI, is the oldest person in British history to bear the title of queen. The previous record-holder was her widowed mother-in-law, Queen Mary, who died in 1953 at age 85 and 303 days.
PEKING (AP) - Amid the crackle of fireworks and the clanging of cymbals Monday, Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci began filming a movie based on the life of China's last emperor.
The joint Italian-Chinese venture is about Pu Yi, the emperor who ended his days as a gardener under the communist regime. The late emperor's brother, Pu Jie, watched as filming began.
Bertolucci is the first foreign filmmaker to receive permission to shoot a film in China about a modern historical figure. His team of more than 100 will be in Peking until November 10 before returning to Italy for the final five weeks of shooting, said spokeswoman Ann Tasker.
Bertolucci, who directed ''Last Tango in Paris'' among other films, said the Peking Film Studio set of the emperor's palace was ''better than the original.'' Chinese authorities decided against allowing filming inside the Forbidden Palace because of fear of damaging the valuable furniture and other items that belonged to China's last royal family.
Pu Yi became emperor in 1908, at age 3, but was deposed three years later with the collapse of the Qing Dynasty.
NEW YORK (AP) - Former ''Tonight Show'' host Jack Paar will return to television this fall on a one-hour special program called ''Jack Paar Comes Home,'' NBC announced Monday.
The special is set to be taped before an audience in September in the network's studios in Rockefeller Center, where Paar was host of ''The Tonight Show'' from 1957 to 1962 and ''The Jack Paar Program'' from 1962 to 1965.
''For those of us who grew up watching television, Jack Paar was an inspiration,'' said Rick Ludwin of NBC Entertainment. He called Paar ''spontaneous and unpredictable.''
Hal Gurnee, Paar's director on both of the earlier programs and currently director of NBC's ''Late Night with David Letterman,'' will direct.
MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) - Hundreds of flags draped windows across Monaco on Monday in honor of Princess Caroline and her new daughter, Charlotte.
Charlotte Marie Pomeline, the second child of the princess and Italian-born industrialist Stefano Casiraghi, was delivered at 7 p.m. Sunday at Princess Grace of Monaco Hospital, the palace said.
''The birth was spontaneous, without the help of anesthetics, according to the wish of the princess, or any other medication. The mother and child are in excellent health,'' said a statement signed by Prof. Emile Hervet and Dr. Hubert Harden, who delivered the infant.
Charlotte is 18.5 inches long and weighs 6.8 pounds.
Caroline, 29, had spent Sunday afternoon at the country residence of her father, Prince Rainier III, who took her to the hospital in the early evening, according to press reports. The princess' husband and other family members joined them at the hospital for the one-hour delivery.
Caroline, the eldest of three children born to Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, married Casiraghi, from Milan, in December 1983.
Since the death of her mother, the former American movie actress Grace Kelly, in 1982, Caroline has assumed the role of first lady in Monaco.
Princess Caroline gave birth to a boy, Andrea Albert Pierre in June 1984.
