BASKING RIDGE, N.J. (AP) _ The American Telephone & Telegraph Co. on Thursday announced a plan to build the first fiber-optic link between the United States and Germany.

The cable is expected to handle about 100,000 simultaneous telephone conversations between the two countries, according to a company statement.

AT&T and a Germany telecommunications company, Deutsche Bundespost Telekom, are scheduled to complete the project in late 1992 or early 1993, said AT&T spokesman David Bikle.

The system would allow AT&T to meet a growing demand for overseas calls to Europe, Bikle said.
