Senator in ethics probe can stay as head of study panel

BOSTON (AP) — Senate President Stan Rosenberg says he sees no reason to remove a state senator who is the subject of an ethics probe from the chairmanship of a committee that is studying government efficiency.
Milton Democrat Brian Joyce earlier agreed to temporarily step aside from his posts as assistant majority leader and head of the powerful Bills in Third Reading committee.
The state's Republican Party on Tuesday said Joyce should also be forced to give up his role as chair of the special Senate committee on improving government. But Rosenberg said that would be unnecessary since the committee only conducts research and does not vote on any legislation.
The Boston Globe has reported potential conflicts of interest focusing on whether Joyce used his position as a senator to boost his law practice.
