BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee sheriff has died while holding office.

The Jackson Sun reports the Haywood County mayor says the sheriff died Monday and the plan is for the 20-member County Commission to elect a successor in October to complete his term, which lasts through August 2018.

Mayor Franklin Smith says Sheriff Melvin Bond had been sick. It's unclear how old Bond was.

Smith says he and Bond worked well on trying to build and open the County Justice Complex. Smith says Bond "really cared about people."

Bond's law enforcement career began in 1989. He was elected sheriff in 2002. He attended Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy.

Smith says Chief Deputy Mike Smothers has been promoted to interim sheriff.

Smith says a general election for sheriff will be held in August 2018.
