Famous Swimming Pool Sinks Into the Seine
Jul. 08, 1993
PARIS (AP) _ The Piscine Deligny, a floating swimming pool on the Seine River and a well-known Paris landmark, sank into the river early today, the fire department reported.
No one was hurt when the pool, constructed on a barge, broke away from its supports and sank around 5:23 a.m. It now sits on the Seine riverbed, fire department officials said.
They said they did not know why the pool's foundations collapsed.
The Piscine Deligny, along the Seine's Left Bank near the Orsay Museum, was a popular summer sunbathing spot and a place to be seen, attracting hundreds of topless women, and men in skimpy bikini briefs.
On Wednesday 1,300 people had gone to the pool as clear skies and temperatures up to 81 degrees prevailed in the French capital.
