SEATTLE (AP) — Marco Pappa, Chad Barrett and Obafemi Martins scored second-half goals and the Seattle Sounders ended Real Salt Lake's season-opening unbeaten streak at 12 with a 4-0 victory Saturday in a game between the two top teams in Major League Soccer.
Gonzalo Pineda also scored on a first-half penalty kick for the Sounders (9-3-2). Pappa's goal was his first of the season. Barrett scored for the second straight game, giving him three goals for the year. Martins tallied his sixth.
While Seattle won its MLS-high fifth straight home match, Salt Lake (6-1-6) fell for the first time, missing a chance to set an MLS record for longest unbeaten streak to start the year.
Los Angeles (12-0 in 1996 and 10-0-2 in 2010) and Kansas City (10-0-2 in 2000) previously had 12-game season-opening undefeated streaks.
Salt Lake also had an overall 16-game regular-season unbeaten streak (8-0-8) end. RSL hadn't lost since last Sept. 21 at home against San Jose, 2-1.
D.C. UNITED 1, SPORTING KANSAS CITY 0
WASHINGTON (AP) — Fabian Espindola scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season to lead D.C. United past Sporting Kansas City.
Bill Hamid made five saves to preserve his third shutout and D.C.'s fifth this season.
United's victory was their first over Sporting since a 2-1 win on May 5, 2010, with Kansas City winning six matches and drawing one since.
Sporting (5-5-4) had its winless streak stretched to five matches as United (6-4-3) climbed past them into second place in the Eastern Conference.
IMPACT 2, REVOLUTION 0
MONTREAL (AP) — Andres Romero and Jack McInerney scored in Montreal's victory over New England.
Romero scored in the third minute, and McInerney in the 38th.
Montreal (2-6-4) ended New England's winning streak at five and its unbeaten run at seven, dropping the Revolution to 7-4-2.
EARTHQUAKES 2, FC DALLAS 1
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi broke a tie in the 45th minute and San Jose beat FC Dallas for its first road victory of the season.
San Jose improved to 4-4-4, and Dallas dropped to 0-6-2 in its last eight and 5-7-3 overall. Dallas has failed to score multiple goals in a game during the eight-game winless streak.
Pierazzi scored on a right-footed volley from 25 yards away that landed just inside the near post and over the fingertips of goalkeeper Chris Seitz.
Blas Perez opened the scoring for Dallas in the 16th minute, and Atiba Harris tied it in the 27th
TORONTO FC 3, CREW 2
TORONTO (AP) — Jermain Defoe scored twice and Doneil Henry headed in the winner in injury time for Toronto FC.
Defoe scored on a penalty shot, and added a second when he one-timed a flick from Gilberto. Henry muscled his way in on a free kick with about a minute left to head in the winner for Toronto (5-4-1).
Justin Meram and Augustin Viana scored for Columbus (4-4-5).
UNION 3, CHIVAS USA 0
CARSON, Calif. (AP) — Conor Casey scored two goals, his first of the season, as the Union beat Chivas USA.
The victory was just the third of the season for the Union while Chivas has lost twice in four days.
Cristian Maidana added a late goal for Philadelphia (3-7-5).
Philadelphia opened the scoring in the 28th minute after Chivas (2-7-4) was whistled for a handball inside the penalty area. Casey scored on the ensuing penalty kick.
In the 66th minute, Casey buried a header off a cross from Maidana. Philadelphia added a third goal when Maidana scored from 15 yards out in the 77th minute.
Oswaldo Minda was sent off in the 84th minute after tackling Philadelphia's Maurice Edu from behind.
