SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Free agent pitcher Mark Gardner, who went 5-5 last season with Florida, signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants on Friday.

Gardner, 34, went to spring training this season as a non-roster invitee with the Marlins. His minor league contract allowed him to declare free agency if he did not make the club's opening day roster.

Gardner has a 41-48 record with a 4.38 ERA in 170 appearances over his seven-year major league career. He was both a starter and reliever with the Marlins.

``Mark Gardner will be a valuable pitcher for the Giants, as his experience and versatility will be a welcomed addition to our staff mix,'' said Giants general manager Bon Quinn.

Gardner was 0-0 with a 5.19 ERA in 10 games this spring in Florida.
