Officials: Man's death ruled accidental drowning
Dec. 19, 2017
WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia officials say the death of a man who fell off a boat in the Ohio River more than five months ago has been ruled an accidental drowning.
The Intelligencer Wheeling News-Register reports Wheeling police announced Monday that the state medical examiner's office ruling closes the investigation into the death of 32-year-old Jerry Dowd Jr.
Police spokesman Philip Stahl says the medical examiner's office reported its findings to investigators last week. Stahl says the investigation by police and the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources found no evidence that a crime had been committed.
Stahl has said others who were with Dowd reported the July 5 accident after he fell backward off the boat. He said officials found Dowd's body in the river's back channel on July 6.
